FoMo / Formulation development for the forming and modification process of European woods
This FoMo project deals with a plant for shaping and thermal modification of European woods for strongly curved components of stringed and plucked instruments. The aim of the project is to design a plant that can be used to shape and modify the curved sides of plucked instruments in a single process. The reason for the development is to prevent frequent fiber breakage and reverse deformation, which occur during subsequent plasticizing due to the embrittlement of the modified wood, and thus to prevent increased scrap during production. The thermal modification of the wood is to be carried out using microwave technology.
The research project was made possible by the SubMat4Music network project.
In its subproject, the HNEE is developing the formulations for the forming and modification process of the European woods, taking into account the dependencies on the wood species, the musical instrument, and the desired sound and color values. Another development point is the elaboration of specifications for model laboratory processes in order to prepare the testing more effectively. HNEE is carrying out the pilot application, in which the different types of wood will be measured, and the results analyzed and evaluated.
